Learning word order: early beginnings

چکیده
We examine the beginning of acquisition relative order function and content words, a fundamental but cross-linguistically highly variable aspect grammar. A review existing empirical literature shows that infants as young 8 months age can distinguish between functors have rudimentary knowledge these two universal lexical categories in their native language. Furthermore, human adults non-human animals such rodents process same linguistic information differently from infants, emphasizing developmental relevance bootstrapping function/content word surface cues available input. discuss implications findings for synergistic view language acquisition, considering how grammar interacts with learning.

Early Word Learning in Context
The remarkable achievements of early word learning and productive language use take place in the natural social setting of a child’s first years of life. This thesis investigates early word learning in a naturalistic, dense, longitudinal corpus of one child’s development over time, focusing on the contributions of environmental variables and social context. The key idea is that word learning is...
متن کاملBilingual beginnings to learning words.
At the macrostructure level of language milestones, language acquisition follows a nearly identical course whether children grow up with one or with two languages. However, at the microstructure level, experimental research is revealing that the same proclivities and learning mechanisms that support language acquisition unfold somewhat differently in bilingual versus monolingual environments. T...
متن کاملLearning biases predict a word order universal.
How recurrent typological patterns, or universals, emerge from the extensive diversity found across the world's languages constitutes a central question for linguistics and cognitive science. Recent challenges to a fundamental assumption of generative linguistics-that universal properties of the human language acquisition faculty constrain the types of grammatical systems which can occur-sugges...
متن کاملWord Order Acquisition in Persian Speaking Children
Objectives: Persian is a pro-drop language with canonical Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order. This study investigates the acquisition of word order in Persian-speaking children. Methods: In the present study, participants were 60 Persian-speaking children (30 girls and 30 boys) with typically developing language skills, and aged between 30-47 months. The 30-minute language samples were audio...
متن کاملAttentional Control and Early Word Learning
There has been increasing interest in the role of early attention in the context of word learning. There has also been growing interest in attentional differences between bilinguals and monolinguals. The present study examined the relationship between mutual exclusivity and attentional control by comparing bilingual children whose attentional control is relatively advanced to agematched monolin...
